World Oceans Day (WOD) is a day set aside every June 8 by the United Nations to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the oceans.
The theme for this year’s UN World Oceans Day 2020 is “Innovation for a Sustainable Ocean.” Innovation relating to the introduction of new methods, ideas, or product is a dynamic term, and one that is fundamentally filled with hope.
WOD presents an important platform to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of world’s oceans.
WOD reminds mankind of the vital role the oceans play in everyday life. The Oceans are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe, unifies the visions and voices of people around the world who have passion to care for the oceans
The five Oceans in the world namely Artic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern Oceans all make up about 70% of the earth’s total surface
The Oceans have remained vital to human existence by providing:
- Food and medicine for over 3 billion people who depend on it as their primary source of protein.
- Livelihood for over 3 billion people through marine and coastal biodiversity
- Absorption of about 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans, buffering the impacts of global warming.
The challenges posed to the ocean is continually increasing, prompting the need to proffer novel solutions in tandem with those spearheading it.
