ECOWAS member states effectively January 2020 will scrap international roaming charges for travelers within the region.

Ghana’s Communications Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful made the announcement during a Government Meet-The-Press series. She said all ECOWAS states were working to implement requisite legal and administrative framework by December 31, 2019.

The ECOWAS Free Roamining initiative was proposed in 2016 and adopted in 2017.
Mobile calls made by regional travellers from within other member states will be billed at the prevailing local call rates.

The move is part of the concerted efforts aimed at promoting regional integration and economic development.
The “people Centered policy” according to the Minister will revolutionize the communication pattern of citizens in the ECOWAS region.

“Implementation of the ECOWAS Roaming Initiative will enhance our revenue generation in the ECOWAS corridor similar to that experienced in other free roaming zones and remove barriers to communication for subscribers,” the minister said
